Instrumentation & measurement
Analogue and RF hardware, from fault-finding to characterisation. A recurring problem is working without documentation: reconstructing a schematic from the board itself, then sweeping each stage to find where behaviour departs from what the topology predicts.
The measurement setup gets as much attention as the circuit. A result you cannot reproduce on a different day, on different equipment, is not yet a result.
Materials Science
Crystal structure, phase transformation, and microstructure are hard to build intuition for from static diagrams. This thread turns them into things you can rotate, scrub, and query — lattice viewers, phase diagrams tied to their cooling curves, and transformation kinetics you can step through.
The output is mostly tools rather than papers. Making a concept manipulable is a legitimate result in its own right.
Autonomous systems
Sensing, control, and decision-making on a small autonomous platform. The interesting part is rarely the happy path: it is what the system does when a sensor degrades, the environment changes, or two behaviours want the actuator at the same time.
sEMG and bioengineering
Surface electromyography end to end: the sensing hardware, the signal conditioning, and the decoding needed to turn a noisy differential voltage into a control input. The applications that interest me are prosthetics, rehabilitation, and human-machine interfaces.
